2015 May 19

Simpson University's Rebecca Messer of San Pedro, CA, received the 2015 Daryl Cartmel Memorial Award for most outstanding contributions to the cross-cultural studies program.

Messer majored in Cross-Cultural Studies.

Messer graduated in December of 2014 but received this award in spring 2015 for her involvement in the program. She served the homeless in Redding through volunteering at a local non-government organization and by spending 48 hours on the street and in homeless shelters seeking to identify with and understand better the lives of the homeless.

Messer also served as a co-leader on a WorldSERVE team to Taiwan in 2014 as well as with other organizations serving in Zambia, Mexico, Panama, and New York City. After graduating, Messer teamed with the Christian and Missionary Alliance to again serve in Taiwan.

"Rebecca is a person of outstanding character and energetic vision for making a lasting contribution in our world," said Dr. Stephen Bailey, professor of intercultural studies. "She approaches the issues of social justice and global poverty with passion and practical responses."
